Please purchase a spiral bound, one subject notebook for Language A. The lined paper inside may be either wide or college rule. This notebook is only for Language A; at times you may have to leave the notebook with Mrs. Price for assessment. Please write your name, "Language A," and "Mrs. Price" clearly on the outside front cover of your notebook. Please purchase a highlighter pen for class as well.

Please write all summer assignments in the notebook and bring the notebook and a highlighter to class on the first day. All notes and in-class assignments will be written in the notebook. For written assignments, you may use either a #2 pencil or a blue/black pen.

Assignment 1: Assignment Due Dates


This assignment is to familiarize you with the location of assignment information and due dates and with the allowed assignment extension rule.

1. At the top of the page of your notebook, please write "Assignment Due Dates" and the date that you complete this assignment.

3. Write a summary of "The 8 am Rule."
4. Click on the assignment in the calendar for July 18.
5. Copy the information in the description of the assignment, including the due date.

Assignment 2: Proofreading Practice


This assignment is to familiarize you with one type of proofreading practice that we will perform in class. Our class will build proofreading skills that will develop a high academic writing style and will find problems that go beyond the very basic errors that computer editing software can find.

1. At the top of the page of your notebook, please write "Proofreading Practice" and the date that you complete this assignment.

3. Write the short essay on the Proofreading Practice page in your notebook, correcting any errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
4. Highlight your corrections.
5. Write the number of highlighted corrections on the top of your notebook's page.

Assignment 3: Essay Analysis


This assignment is to familiarize you with the type of essay analysis will we be engaged in and the style of topics used in timed writing assignments. In a full writing cycle in class, we will review the topic, analyze up to two example essays using the grading rubric, write an original essay based on the topic, peer edit the essay, and make a final revision. For this assignment, you will only analyze a sample essay.

1. At the top of the page of your notebook, please write "Essay Analysis" and the date that you complete this assignment.

3. Click on the link to the Descriptive Essay Scoring Rubric.
4. Familiarize yourself with holistic essay scores from 6 to 1 by reading the Descriptive Essay Scoring Rubric.
5. Return to the Essay Analysis page.
6. Read the first topic: "Favorite Possession."
7. Click on the link "Analyze Favorite Possession Essay 1." Remember when grading that the writer had only 30 - 40 minutes to write the essay.
8. In your notebook write down the essay score (from 6 to 1), explain why you gave it that score, and how the writer could improve the essay.

Assignment 4: International Literature - China


This assignment is to familiarize you with some of the key analysis terms that you will use when evaluating texts in class. In keeping with the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate, we will be discussing and reading poetry, literature, and other forms of communication found throughout the globe. This summer, and for the beginning of the first quarter, we will focus on China.

1. At the top of the page of your notebook, please write " China - Throwing Out the Baby" and the date that you complete this assignment.

3. Review the basic analytical information that you will need on the Literature Crib Notes page.

5. Read the short story "Throwing Out the Baby" by Xu Zechen.
6. Write the Literature Crib Notes questions in your notebook. Write your answers about "Throwing Out the Baby" in your notebook. Answers do not necessarily have to be in complete sentences, but I expect copious details, especially for the last question of each section.
7. Be sure that you know how to save copies of the short story and the Literature Crib Notes onto the hard drive of your computer. If internet service is interrupted during the school day, you will be expected to have a copy of the assigned story on your hard drive.
